What Not to Do After Dental Implant Surgery

Having a successful surgery is just one step along the way to restoring your smile with the help of dental implants. While the actual implantation process matters, so too does the critical time immediately following your procedure. If you’re getting dental implants, here are 5 things you should not do until your dentist gives you the green light!

Use Tobacco

If you smoke, vape, or chew tobacco, quitting will not only benefit your overall health, but it will also help you heal properly from dental implant surgery. Tobacco products can slow healing, which in turn can disrupt the osseointegration process that helps your implant integrate with your jawbone.

Excessive Rinsing or Swishing

When you first get your dental implants, you will want to keep your mouth clean by rinsing with water or a special mouthwash but be careful not to swish too vigorously. This can cause bleeding and prevent clotting around the implant.

Consume Hard or Hot Foods or Beverages

These can not only cause pain, but they can also cause delays in healing. Thus, it is best to stick with a soft diet for the first few days after surgery and stick with cool or cold beverages.  Once you do graduate to firmer foods, try to avoid chewing on the side your implants are on until they are feeling better. This will give you a little extra healing time.

Drink From a Straw

Drinking from a straw can dislodge the blood clot forming at your incision site. This clot helps stop blood flow and keeps the incision protected from food debris, plaque, and bacteria. It is an essential part of healing, so be sure to keep it in place until it dissolves on its own.

Vigorous Exercise

Exercise is great for the body and for the mind, and missing a regular workout can sometimes make you feel anxious or “off.”  However, when you have dental implant surgery, you must allow yourself time to relax and heal. Exercise increases blood flow, which can increase bleeding around the implant site and slow healing. Be sure to wait three to five days after surgery before working out again, and ease back into any strenuous or vigorous activity when you do.

Remember, the success of your implant surgery depends on many factors, but avoiding these activities can help protect your new implants and help ensure a safe and effective healing process.
